What is the best time to post on Facebook?

As we’ve already discussed, you should try to post 1-3 times daily on your Facebook business page and spread your posts out through the day.

But what are the best times to post?

There is no clear answer to this. Different studies offer different conclusions on when you should post on your business page.

But what they fail to take into account is that there can be no universal ‘best time’ to post across time zones, audiences and types of pages. Each page has to determine for itself what the ideal time to post is.

Know your audience

Your Facebook Insights (analytics) will tell you when your Facebook fans are online. To see this data, click on ‘Insights’ towards the top left corner of your page. NOTE: Insights are only available for business pages with 30 or more ‘likes’.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Just because your fans are online, this does not mean that they are seeing your posts. It just means that these fans are seeing some content on Facebook.

In the above graph, the maximum number of fans are online at around 9:00 pm.

So you should post every night at 9:00 pm, right?

Well, not necessarily.

While it is important to be aware of when your fans are online, here are 2 other factors that are equally important:

1. Competition

Let’s see what happens when you post at peak times.

A study by Wisemetrics found that for nearly 30% of Pages, the maximum number of fans are online between 9-10pm.

It stands to reason, then, that most of these pages will be posting between 9 and 10 p.m – trying to optimize their reach.

Since Facebook only shows a certain number of posts to each user, this means that your post will be fighting with a lot of posts to get visibility if you post at peak times.

Pages such as Jon Loomer, Constant Contact and Wisemetrics have found that posting at off-peak times actually resulted in a higher reach for them as there was less competition at this time.

Takeaway – consider posting at non-peak times.

If you do decide to post at peak times, make sure your content is interesting enough to get a lot of engagement. This is what will determine how well it does in the competition for reach.

2. Post life

Your content will not be shown to all your fans as soon as you post it.

Most posts reach 75% of their audience within 2 hours and 90% in about 5 hours.

This means that you need to look at the your how many of your fans can be reached over the coming 4-5 hours.

Takeaway – Post 1-3 hours before your peak time. This way you’ll hit the increasing traffic and, hopefully, miss the most intense competition. This strategy seems to work best with our Facebook page.

There is no universal answer to the ‘When is the best time to post?’ question. Each page must find its own sweet spot.

But here are the three most important factors to help you find the right answer for your page:

1) Know your audience: Check your insights and know when your fans are online.

2) Always experiment: Try posting at different times and compare the results (you could try posting 1-3 hours before peak time, then again at peak times, and finally 3-4 hours after peak times). See when you get the maximum reach and engagement.

3) Be engaging: Most importantly, post engaging content to avoid being buried in the competition for reach. As long as your content is well targeted and relevant, your audience will engage with it, ensuring that your page posts are shown to the maximum number of fans.
